What does Proverbs 19:29 mean?

Proverbs 19:29 says that people who treat correction with contempt or persist in foolishness face punishment. The proverb presents that punishment as something ready for them, using the language of judgment and physical blows to make its warning vivid.

The two halves of the verse use similar pictures: “judgments” are set alongside “stripes,” and “scorners” alongside “fools.” After verse 28’s picture of a corrupt witness, verse 29 turns to the consequences awaiting people who reject sound judgment.

The Hebrew behind Proverbs 19:29

• “scorners” — לוּץ (luts): The word carries the sense of mocking or treating something with contempt. In Proverbs, a scorner is more than someone who makes a joke; the word often describes a person who refuses correction with contempt.
• “stripes” — מַהֲלֻמָה (mahalumah): The word refers to blows or beatings. “Stripes” pictures marks left by blows, rather than stripes of color or a pattern.

Why Proverbs 19:29 matters
