What does Psalms 106:7 mean?

Psalms 106:7 says that Israel’s ancestors failed to grasp what God’s remarkable acts in Egypt showed them. Although they had received much kindness, they did not keep it in mind, and they turned against God when they reached the sea.

The speaker says “our fathers,” linking the people singing the psalm with the earlier generation. The verse recalls the moment when the Israelites faced the sea with the Egyptian army pursuing them, as described in Exodus 14:10–12. Their words to Moses there express fear and protest.

The Hebrew behind Psalms 106:7

• “understood” — שָׂכַל (sakal): This word can carry the sense of paying attention to something and grasping its significance. Here it points beyond simply knowing that the wonders happened.
• “mercies” — חֶסֶד (ḥesed): This word often describes faithful kindness. In this verse, “the multitude” of these mercies emphasizes how often God had shown such kindness.
• “Red” — סוּף (suf): This word means “reed” or “reeds.” The place name rendered “Red sea” in the KJV is often understood to mean “Sea of Reeds.”

Why Psalms 106:7 matters

• The verse presents the ancestors’ conduct as part of a shared history. The speaker has just said, “We have sinned with our fathers” in verse 6, before beginning the account of their actions.
• The account places the protest immediately after the wonders in Egypt. That order makes the contrast sharper: the people had already seen powerful acts before they faced danger at the sea.
• The protest did not prevent their rescue. Verse 8 says God saved them “for his name’s sake,” giving a reason for the rescue that goes beyond their conduct.
