Ezekiel 16:35 (KJV)

What does Ezekiel 16:35 mean?

Ezekiel 16:35 is a direct call from God, through the prophet Ezekiel, to Jerusalem, which is described as a "harlot," telling her to listen carefully to what God is about to say. The verse sets up a solemn announcement, warning that God is about to pronounce judgment because of Jerusalem’s unfaithfulness.

In this chapter, God is speaking through Ezekiel to the people of Jerusalem, using strong language to describe their spiritual unfaithfulness as if it were adultery. The term "harlot" is a metaphor for how Jerusalem has turned away from God to follow other gods and practices. This verse is a turning point where God demands their attention before delivering a message of coming consequences.

The Hebrew behind Ezekiel 16:35

  • "harlot" (זֹנָה, zonah): This word is often used in the Hebrew Bible for someone who is unfaithful, especially in a spiritual sense. Here, it highlights how seriously God views Jerusalem’s turning away from Him.
  • "hear" (שָׁמַע, shama): This word means more than just listening; it carries the sense of paying close attention and being ready to respond. God is not just speaking—He expects Jerusalem to take His words to heart.
  • "word" (דָּבָר, davar): This term refers to a message or declaration, often with authority. It underscores that what follows is not just advice but a binding statement from God.
  • "LORD" (יְהוָה, YHWH): This is the personal name of God in the Hebrew Bible, emphasizing that the message comes from the one true God, not just any authority.
