Ezekiel 16:36 (KJV)

What does Ezekiel 16:36 mean?

Ezekiel 16:36 says that God is declaring judgment on Jerusalem because of the city's moral corruption, which is described as being openly exposed through idolatry and unfaithfulness, including the sacrifice of children to idols. The verse uses strong language to show how Jerusalem’s actions have been shameful and have led to severe consequences.

In this verse, God is speaking through the prophet Ezekiel to the people of Jerusalem, comparing their behavior to that of someone who has acted shamefully and been exposed for it. The historical setting is a time when Jerusalem had turned away from God to worship idols and had even participated in child sacrifice. This verse is part of a longer passage where Jerusalem’s unfaithfulness is described in vivid, personal terms to highlight the seriousness of their actions.

The Hebrew behind Ezekiel 16:36

• "filthiness" (נְחֻשְׁתֵּךְ, neḥushtekh): This word often means "bronze" or "copper," but here it is used figuratively for impurity or moral filth, emphasizing the depth of Jerusalem’s corruption.
• "nakedness" (עֶרְוָה, ‘ervah): This word means "nakedness" or "shame," and its use here underlines how Jerusalem’s sins have been publicly exposed.
• "whoredoms" (תַּזְנוּתַיִךְ, taznutayikh): This word refers to acts of unfaithfulness, especially in a spiritual sense, describing how Jerusalem has sought after other "lovers" (foreign nations or gods) instead of remaining faithful to God.
• "idols" (גִּלּוּלִים, gillulim): This word refers to idols, often with a sense of disgust or worthlessness, highlighting the offensive nature of the city’s idolatry.

Why Ezekiel 16:36 matters

• The verse clarifies that Jerusalem’s judgment is not arbitrary but is a direct result of specific actions—idolatry, unfaithfulness, and child sacrifice—that are described in graphic terms to stress their seriousness.
• The language of exposure and shame connects to the wider passage, where Jerusalem is compared to an unfaithful spouse, making the consequences of their actions feel personal and relational, not just legal or ritual.
• Understanding the strong original words for "filthiness," "nakedness," and "idols" helps the reader see how deeply offensive these actions were considered, both socially and spiritually, in the context of ancient Israel.
