What does Mark 14:41 mean?

Mark 14:41 shows Jesus telling his disciples that the decisive moment has arrived. Their time of waiting in the garden is ending, and Jesus is about to be handed over to people he calls “sinners.”

Jesus has returned to the disciples for the third time and finds them sleeping. His words “Sleep on now, and take your rest” can sound surprising, since he immediately announces that the hour has come. The next verse makes the urgency clear: Jesus tells them to get up because his betrayer is near.

  • “betrayed” — παραδίδωμι (paradidōmi): This word can mean “hand over” or “deliver up.” The wording points to Jesus being placed in the hands of others, while the KJV’s “betrayed” also brings out the betrayal involved.

Why Mark 14:41 matters
